A few thoughts about symmetry

By Roy Hickling

A study once created a computer generated face,

its features amalgamated from a couple of dozen models.  When asked to choose the most beautiful

amongst all of these images,

people invariably chose the artificial,

homogenized, perfectly symmetrical face.

We are attracted to this ideal –

we look for it.

Yet

Symmetry

By definition doesn’t exist.

If all points opposite a center must

have an exact counterpoint to create symmetry,

then what about that single

point

at the center?

Symmetrical sound waves cancel each other out to silence.  However flirting with the border of this

Event or phasing sound waves

creates a pleasing effect.

   The tension developed as symmetry

wavers to the asymmetrical

is far more interesting than any construct of

                                                               perfection,

no matter where we seek it.
